Coaching: for a renewed sense of purpose and priority

What do coaches do when their nearest and dearest ask for coaching support? Such requests raise many questions. If we coach our loved ones how can we be sure to hold the boundaries between our personal relationship and our relationship as coach and client? And how do we ensure that we bring none other than a coaching agenda to our coaching interactions? Sometimes, the answer is to refer our friends, brothers, husbands or wives to a trusted colleague. This is how Eddie Maguire, Head of IT Delivery in his company, came to be my client in February of last year.

Every client we work with teaches us something about what we most enjoy in our coaching. When I started working with Eddie, I already knew how much I enjoy working with men and women in senior leadership roles – this has, after all, been my heartland for a number of years now. One thing that Eddie and clients like him have taught me is this: that I enjoy working in a deep and lasting coaching relationship with clients. Why? Because such work can be transformational for the client, bringing results which continue way after the coaching has finished.

Eddie is also one of the clients who has taught me that the line between a “corporate” and a “private” client is not always clear. Sometimes my work with corporate clients has focused on personal agendas whilst sometimes those clients who pay for their own coaching can bring an agenda which is entirely work-related and of great benefit to the business in which they work. And either way, my senior leadership clients are as likely to be private clients as they are to be sponsored by their organisations.

What does Eddie have to say about his experience of coaching?

I was already taking part in an in-depth leadership development programme when I started working in coaching partnership with Dorothy.

I’ve had some great results from coaching. I achieved all my early goals for coaching and I got the promotion I was looking for. More than this, I am much more secure in who I am and what I want – coaching, together with our leadership development programme, produced this result. I have greater self confidence and self belief and I know what I have that gives me my place in the company’s future. The big thing is that I no longer question my right to lead and I’m willing and comfortable to be the obvious point of authority.

What would I say about coaching? Coaching has provided a space in which to explore and it’s always about me: it’s about my issues and what I can do. You could say it’s about developing me and not about developing a specific skill set. I always get value from our sessions. I started coaching with some clear goals and, having met them I’m now using it to help with specific issues and challenges as well as defining my next goals.

What would I say about Dorothy as a coach? She always gives me space to dump stuff and then move forward. She’s very good at listening and asking questions – catching the meaning of words and offering challenging questions. I always come away from coaching with the background noise in my head reduced. Our sessions create focus for me, giving me a renewed sense of purpose and priority.

Would I recommend coaching? Yes, I would – particularly for people struggling to achieve their potential or who are unaware of their potential. It’s a mind-expanding experience and an opportunity to expand your horizons – to open up areas of thought you never realised were not there.

When does “not having learned yet” become a positive choice?

Last week I fielded a call from a colleague in the world of Nonviolent Communication. He let me know that I’d taken some actions that hadn’t met his needs and made some requests of me to support him in meeting his needs. So far, so good – this was what sometimes gets described as “classical” Nonviolent Communication.

There was something else, too. I sensed anger and I asked my colleague if he was feeling angry to which he replied that he was. I found it difficult to have a productive conversation – one that met both our needs and served to build and maintain trust – as long as my colleague was speaking from a place of anger with its implicit belief that I was responsible both for his angry feelings and for taking actions to meet his needs.

Marshall Rosenberg, the originator of Nonviolent Communication often teaches that some forms of expression are a “tragic expression of an unmet need” – tragic, because as strategies for meeting one’s needs go, they are highly likely to fail. As an alternative, Rosenberg invites his students to transform anger into a deeper understanding of their needs. So, when another’s action stimulates anger, you might choose to ask for help in transforming your anger or to do this work yourself. Having done that, you are in a strong position to share your needs in ways another person can hear. In this way, you are more likely to have a productive conversation.

My experience with my colleague raised an important question for me – one that I bump into from time to time: at what point does “not having learned yet” become a positive choice for which one is solely responsible? If I accept that we are all doing the best we know how at a given point in time and acting from a positive intention (no matter how effective or ineffective our strategy) my choice of response might be wholly different to the response I might choose if I take a different view – that the person concerned has the tools he or she needs to speak in ways which are supportive to us both and has chosen not to use them.

Looking forward, I’m wondering whether I might, in future, begin a conversation like this by asking for clarity: dear colleague, are you asking for me to support you as you seek to transform your anger and clarify your needs? Or are you – from a place of anger – wanting me to take responsibility for your feelings of anger and for taking some actions that might make you feel better? And having clarifed my colleague’s requests I might choose to say yes – or no.

This example is but one of many and it’s focused on those people who have studied what it takes to be effective (whether via a professional coaching training, Neurolinguistic Programming, Nonviolent Communication or some other training). This is before one even considers a further question: and what about those people who choose not to hear the feedback that might lead them to embark on a course of learning?

I wonder, what are your views?

Signing up for social networking

Kenny*, my “e-mentor”, has had me signing up for various networking sites. I was already signed up to Facebook, LinkedIn and Plaxo and I’ve just said yes to my first invitation (you guessed it! From Kenny) to ecademy. I took my coaching profile to use as my profile on ecademy so I am quickly up and running.

As it happens, I mentioned my plans – to create a visible and accessible on-line presence using every possible means which will benefit me and everyone I know – to a close friend who shared that he, too, is seeking to create a more visible presence on LinkedIn. Were we LinkedIn? No – at least, not yet. I sent him an invitation after we spoke along with one to Kenny.

I am still learning about the benefits of all these sites and no doubt will be for some time. For now, though, I am simply thinking about those people I most value and appreciate and beginning to invite them to be connected via these sites.

*Yes, that’s Kenny Tranquille who, as well as being my e-mentor, is a nutritionist and coach. He has my vote every time!

About Executive Coaching

Today I take a few moments to share a view of Executive Coaching which I often share with potential clients:

What is Executive Coaching?

Executive Coaching is, quite simply, coaching for Executives. The International Coach Federation or ICF (www.coachfederation.org) defines professional coaching as “an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organisations”.

At times, individual Executives seek out a Coach. At times, organisations actively encourage key Executives to work with an Executive Coach and may outline an agenda for coaching to clarify the benefits expected as a result of investing in coaching.

Most Executive Coaches work in a partnership with Executive Clients which is bound by a clear agreement (or ‘Coaching Alliance’) which outlines the agenda for coaching, how the Coach and Client will work together in pursuit of desired outcomes and what information will and won’t be shared outside the coaching partnership.

How do individuals benefit from Executive Coaching?

Executive Coaching is an investment in the immediate success and the sustainable, long-term development of the individual Executive, helping clients to deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life.

It’s not just that Executive Coaching helps the individual to do a better job: Executive Coaching helps the individual to clarify his or her direction and values, to build energy and motivation and to take powerful steps towards a compelling future.

How do organisations benefit from Executive Coaching?

Imagine a work force in which each and every individual is working to his or her full potential. By helping the individual Executive to tap into his or her larger potential, Executive Coaching can raise levels of performance in the organisation. Often, this brings about a knock-on effect as others in turn become more effective as a result of working with or for the individual Coaching Client.

In addition, by targeting groups of leaders Executive Coaching can help to build greater personal and leadership effectiveness across the whole organisation. This can lead to improved and sustainable results across the organisation.

Dorothy Nesbit on Twitter

That’s it! I’ve done it! I am now on Twitter as DorothyNesbit and I’ve posted my first update. You can find me at http://twitter.com/DorothyNesbit.

In time, I plan to link Twitter to my blog, Facebook etc. to make for easy updating. And in truth, I still have a great deal to learn about how to make the most of it.

For now, though, it’s one step at a time! I can speak with Kenny*, my friend, nutritionist and fellow coach – oh! and e-mentor! – tomorrow knowing that I’ve done my homework and signed up on Twitter.

*That’s Kenny Tranquille – look him up on google. I’m always delighted to point people in his direction.

Dorothy Nesbit: meet your coach

This is the second of two coaching profiles that I often use. Originally I put together the profile below for an event which took place on board ship. This is reflected in the use of metaphor:

What makes the difference between those who sail ahead in life and those who find themselves labouring in the backwaters?
What more becomes possible and with what ease when we know where we are heading?
How can people create a sustainable and enriching journey towards happiness and success?

Background

During a career spanning twenty years Dorothy has navigated these and other key questions. Her journey to date has taken her through training and consulting to Executive Coaching, where she now helps senior leaders and their organisations to chart a course to personal, professional and organisational success.

Coaching Approach

Bringing warmth, compassion and humour as well as directness, honesty and challenge to her coaching, Dorothy is on course to realise her own dream of becoming a Master Certified Coach with the International Coach Federation. Widely known for her integrity as a fellow traveller she forges powerful coaching partnerships to support clients in making the journey they dream of.

About Dorothy

In her own life, Dorothy places a high priority on living in the fullness of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, seeking to create relationships – with herself and others – in which everyone thrives. As well as enjoying her career, friends and family she loves to sing and has been a member of the London Symphony Chorus since 1986.

Dorothy worked with The Work Foundation and the Hay Group before founding Learning for Life (Consulting) in 2002. She is a certified NLP Coach, member of the International Coach Federation and Fellow of the RSA.

The coach on-line: setting an intention

OK, OK. It’s high time I took my online presence to the next level!

Since I set up Learning for Life (Consulting) in 2002 I’ve enjoyed writing my newsletter and last year I set up my blog. Have I enjoyed it? You betcha! I’ve also learned that – one way or another – I’m not a bad networker. I keep in touch with a wide range of friends, colleagues and clients and I’m adept at putting people in touch with each other. I could go on.

This comes back to me in abundance. Many of my new clients come to me by referral and this brings many benefits, including the benefit of working with high levels of mutual trust right from Day 1.

Still, it’s all a little disjointed – “random”, some might say. My friend Kenny thinks so, too! Last week, after playing “telephone tag” for a few days, we finally spoke and Kenny gave me an overview of just what’s possible which left me feeling rather overwhelmed. Now I know how Kenny shares so much information about his business as a nutritionist without making it a full time job! You only have to google “Kenny Tranquille” to get a sense of his online presence. (And if you’re looking for a nutritionist in London or a great life coach then I recommend you do).

So, today I have set my intention – to create a visible and accessible on-line presence using every possible means which will benefit me and everyone I know. I’ve signed Kenny up as my mentor and buddy in this and we have our first call scheduled for Thursday.

Meantime I have my first homework: to sign up on Twitter.

Dorothy Nesbit, Coaching Biography

I have been sending out invitations for a series of coaching groups together with my coaching profile and testimonial. Never – until today – have I thought to post my coaching profile on my blog.

In truth, I have two. The one below is the more formal of the two, which I use with most of my corporate clients:

Dorothy is an Executive Coach with twenty years’ experience in developing leadership at individual and organisational level through leadership research, executive assessment, leadership development and 1:1 Executive Coaching.

Dorothy has consulted widely across sectors in the UK and Europe including the finance, insurance, pharmaceutical, professional and education sectors.

Dorothy began coaching early in her career, both as a coach to leaders participating in leadership development programmes and as a coach and mentor to professional colleagues. In 2004 she completed a professional coach training certified by the International Coaching Federation and now places Executive Coaching at the centre of her work.

Dorothy works with high-potential leaders – from first-time leaders through to directors – who are interested to release their own potential and that of the organisation they manage. Typically Dorothy helps clients to:

· Establish a clear vision, overall direction and concrete goals for self, team or organisation;
· Build the climate for high personal, team or organisational performance;
· Create a unique success recipe for their own personal and leadership effectiveness;
· Create improved strategies for intra- and interpersonal communication;
· Develop and implement strategies for sustained high performance.

Dorothy begins by helping clients to establish clear goals for coaching and to support them as they take steps to realise their goals. Like gardening or exercise, Executive Coaching yields its best results when the investment in coaching is regular and Dorothy typically meets with clients for an hour a week or fortnight over a three-, six- or twelve-month period. Her clients highlight the way she balances challenge with support to create the climate in coaching for accelerated progress and results. Occasionally, Dorothy uses 360 degree and competency feedback to support coaching and is certified to use the Hay Group Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI).

Dorothy has an MA (Cantab), is a certified NLP Coach and member of the International Coach Federation and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Announcing the NVC Marketing Group

Today I am sending out the third of three invitations to practitioners of Nonviolent Communication to join a coaching group. This one – the NVC Marketing Group – aims to help its participants to attract those people they most want to work with – and plenty of them.

Do you feel blessed – grateful, privileged – when you think of the role that nonviolent communication has played in your life?

Are you committed to sharing nonviolent communication with others – through your own practice and as a trainer?

Do you yearn to attract the people you most want to work with – and plenty of them? And do you sometimes wonder how?

Do you feel excited when you think that “marketing” could be something that you do with ease – a source of joy in its own right?

Are you committed to explore what you can do – and how – to make your marketing work for you?

I’m excited to announce the NVC Marketing Group. This is a coaching group for 6 – 8 NVC trainers who are committed to learn how to market their NVC offering in ways which attract the people they most want to work with – whilst also meeting their own needs.

I’m looking for the 6 – 8 NVC trainers for whom this coaching group is a longed-for and exciting source of focus, momentum and support – a catalyst for new possibilities.

Please help me by signing up for this group and/or by forwarding this e-mail to those NVC trainers you know for whom this might be the right thing at the right time – right now!

I’m impressed by Dorothy’s collaborative and proactive approach to marketing and look forward to learning more from her.

Gina Lawrie
NVC Trainer

The NVC Marketing Group: About you

As a committed and experienced practitioner of NVC, you have been exploring for some time what it means to live your life from a place of compassion (or nonviolence). You are resourceful in the way you take care of yourself (if you’re not, this may not be the group for you). You recognise and are committed to the deep ongoing journey implied in practising nonviolent communication.

You are excited about a world in which more and more people engage from a place of nonviolence and, over time, you have invested in playing a role in making this happen. You have explored and identified what contribution you want to make. You have made the commitment to become a trainer – perhaps you are already a certified trainer. You are offering courses, events and other ways to engage with NVC.

Whilst you are a committed and experienced practitioner and trainer of NVC, you are no marketing specialist. At times, you wonder how you can reach more people to take part in the events and activities you offer. This would meet your deep desire to contribute to a world in which many people are able to connect with their own needs and the needs of others. You also want to make your contribution in ways which support you in meeting your needs.

It’s not that you don’t have experiences and successes behind you – you have. Still, you feel excited when you think of joining up to seven of your fellow NVC trainers who share your commitment to find new ways to attract people to the spirit and practice of NVC.

Currently, you are ready to commit to a journey of exploration in this area. You want to find new ways to reach those people who could most benefit from your help right now – and plenty of them. You are committed to finding ways to create a marketing presence which is totally aligned to your values. And you recognise that this is as much about your own journey of exploration as it is about marketing methods.

You are ready to bring everything that you are to the group – your strengths, your fears, your dreams, your inner resources. You’re ready to share yourself fully and honestly with other members of the group and to seek the help and support you need to move forward. It’s not that you need to be rescued – you know you have what it takes! Still, you want to attract more people to your courses than you’ve been able to so far and you’re ready to invest your time, effort and learning in order to find ways to make this happen.

I was very moved by Dorothy’s presence and contributions to the group during a recent NVC experience where we met. In particular, she approached people’s hearts and their situations with great care, consideration and insight. I loved her warm laughter and soft tears – a wise, vibrant lady!

Should you take advantage of our early bird registration, your total annual fee will be reduced to £1,732.50 plus VAT. You can pay this in one payment or in instalments. Your first instalment, a non-refundable deposit of £292.50 plus VAT, secures your place in the group. I will send you invoices for five additional instalments of £288.00 plus VAT in September and November 2009 and January, March and May 2010.

Offering value for money to committed NVC trainers

By working as a group, the NVC Marketing Group offers the same quality support at a fraction of the cost of one-to-one coaching. At the same time, group coaching offers an experience one-to-one coaching just can’t provide.

What’s more, your one-to-one coaching hours are available to you at the same cost as your group coaching hours – a significant discount on my standard coaching fees for private clients. In effect, I am offering you a rare “deal”: in exchange for this extraordinary discount, you agree to become an advocate for my business, letting people know about the services and the quality of service that I provide.

And there’s more! As long as you are a member of the NVC Marketing Group, you are eligible for a discount on additional one-to-one coaching. This will be available to you for the duration of your membership of this group at £100.00 plus VAT per hour – that’s one third off my standard fees for private clients and small business owners.

These fees reflect my commitment to offer support to a group I passionately want to support – NVC trainers.

I’d been prevaricating over a number of things and was getting down in the dumps about it. Dorothy was able to constructively get me to question some of my beliefs which were (unbeknown to me) getting in the way of a number of marketing steps that I needed to take. With Dorothy’s questions and coaching I was able to realise that success can be measured in a number of different ways and can be different shades of grey. Feeling energised by our coaching conversation, the next day I put together my own blog, celebrated my success and felt good about what I was trying to do. I would still be prevaricating today (two weeks later) if it wasn’t for Dorothy and really do make sure that I celebrate all my successes, big or small. The $64 million dollar question: would I recommend Dorothy? Absolutely!

The NVC Marketing Group: How It Works

Here’s how it works:

· Once you know this is the group for you, you make a one-year commitment to the group with the option to continue to work together if this is what the group wants. As soon as you sign up, we’ll schedule your one-to-one preparatory coaching session at a time to suit you. Your first group call will lay the foundations for our work together, helping you and other group members to connect with each other and agreeing key ways of working together right from the start.

· As your group coach, I schedule and facilitate each meeting. I provide a format for our work together – at least to begin with. You’ll also have the input and support of 6 or 7 amazing NVC Trainers who, like you, are committed to making the journey of learning that will make it possible to attract the people you most want to work with.

· Our group calls take place by conference call at a number and with a pin code that is unique to our group. You commit to dial in on time for our calls, each time. You can do this from anywhere in the world.

· Beginning in September, we meet for two 90-minute group calls per month. In December we have just one call and in August we have no calls – a total of twenty-one 90-minute calls.

· On the call we check in, noticing what’s alive for us as we begin our call and sharing where we’re making progress and where we need help. We’ll also take time to notice what’s working and to share hints and tips. This is a powerful way to share best practice and to build momentum towards our goals. We’ll also choose an area of focus for each call – an area in which group members want to make progress. We’ll explore this area before setting up clear and uncompromising intentions for our time between calls. All of these intentions will reflect the overarching goals of helping you to realise your dreams as an NVC trainer whilst also creating a life which fully honours your needs. Finally, we’ll take time to check out, noticing what you are taking away from the call.

· As your group coach, I’ll be providing coaching throughout each call and to every member of the group. This isn’t about “taking it in turns” – it’s about working together in ways which engage us all, all the time.

· Between calls, and during December, you’ll be putting your intentions into action and noticing what works – and what doesn’t. Prior to each call, you’ll check in with yourself and get ready to check in with the group. In August, the group will take a break – and maybe you will, too.

· Six times a year I’ll be offering an additional, optional 60-minute call. Each call offers an opportunity to focus on an area of interest to you with the help of an expert in the field. I’ve scheduled the dates. You’ll specify the areas you want to explore. You’ll be sharing in the responsibility to request input – of me, of each other, of people outside the group whose input you’d value.

· Your non-refundable deposit of £325.00 plus VAT secures your place in the group. I will send you an invoice for your five additional instalments of £320.00 plus VAT in September and November 2009 and January, March and May 2010.

· Over the year, you will stretch and grow into the learning and actions that will propel you forward, helping you both to accelerate your progress and to stay the course. You’ll benefit from a growing momentum and awareness of progress – your own, and that of the group.

· I hope you’ll be able to come to all of our group coaching calls, but if circumstances cause you to miss a call, I’ll record it so you can listen to it later.

I enjoyed the coaching from Dorothy, the combination of her skill, the quality of her listening warmth and humour was very effective and helpful. Thanks.

The NVC Marketing Group: What It’s Not

· The NVC Marketing Group is not a training programme. There’s no curriculum and I won’t be training you. Instead, I’ll be your coach. That means I’ll be using a coaching approach to help you to tap into your own inner resources. In this way you will determine your own curriculum – the ground you need to cover to move forward. In this way, you’ll be finding your own way forward.

· The NVC Marketing Group is not a joint marketing committee. There’s no intention to plan and execute shared marketing campaigns (though it’s possible you may choose to collaborate in planning and marketing joint events). Rather, the NVC Marketing Group is a group of individuals, each with his or her own dreams and plans, who come together to learn about marketing in ways which build motivation, momentum and – by practical action – progress.

· The NVC Marketing Group is not an NVC Practice Group or an Empathy Group. Whilst the focus may, at times, be on you, this will be in the context – always – of the larger group. So, whilst you can expect this group to be a place of understanding, celebration and support and whilst you can expect your own understanding and practice of NVC to deepen through our work together, you may find you have needs which for which you will need to seek support outside the group.

I’d thoroughly recommend Dorothy as an authentic, experienced and elegant coach. My experience of being part of any initiative she has organised has been highly positive. I’m sure this will be a great opportunity and catalyst for group members.

Introducing Dorothy Nesbit, Your Group Coach

With a background in training and consulting and a lifelong focus on leadership and personal effectiveness I am both new to coaching and a seasoned coach. Throughout my career I have been involved in coaching leaders. Recognising this led me to the decision, in 2003, to name coaching as a part of my practice and to begin the journey towards establishing a coaching practice and towards professional accreditation.

2003 was also the year in which I first heard of Marshall Rosenberg and nonviolent communication. Amongst the many fields in which I have studied, including leadership competencies and emotional intelligence, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and nonviolent communication (NVC), NVC touched a chord and has become a touchstone for me – a coming home. Since I first read Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life I have participated in 35 days training in NVC.

As a coach, I offer a compassionate approach, aiming to provide a balance of challenge and support which is uniquely tailored to meet the needs of each client. My coaching is rooted in my understanding of what works across a variety of areas in clients’ professional and personal lives. My coaching is rooted in my own life experience and in my deep and continuing learning journey. My coaching is rooted in my own commitment to nonviolence.

My current coaching portfolio includes both executive and personal clients and I like to work with clients in a deep and lasting coaching relationship. My choice to offer coaching groups reflects both my love of working with groups and my commitment to offer coaching as widely as I can.

You can get to know me ahead of time by looking at my website (at www.learningforlifeconsulting.co.uk) and my blog (at http://dorothynesbit.blogspot.com). I also attach two coaching CVs.

The real pleasure of knowing Dorothy as a colleague and as a coach is her powerful and infectious enthusiasm for inspiring others to develop. She achieves this by truly engaging you with her curiosity, her integrity, her commitment and her ability to enable you to believe you can be all you set out to be. I would never hesitate to recommend Dorothy.
